History

  • Founded in 1999, the livestock export centre has been operational since 2001. It originated as a Languedoc-Roussillon Elevage Regional EIG initiative instigated by the Sète Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The Languedoc-Roussillon regional council and the European Union gave the project generous financial backing. Notwithstanding constant changes in community regulations, SARL SEPAB took very few years to become the leading centre for livestock export in Europe.

By 1 January 2017, 1,412,550 head of cattle and 485,235 head of sheep had transited here since its foundation.

Trade has been varied, owing to fluctuating exchange and petroleum rates or to health crises.

In 2005, the end of community aid for export of meat cattle – the spearhead of the trade – curbed the process of development.

It was only in 2009 that business, for all types of cattle, returned to normal with an export rate of 53,000 head.
